help2kids Aid Project Manager Job Vacancy in Malawi

Description help2kids is looking for a motivated Project Manager to help manage our projects in Malawi. Gain great experience working in a management position with a small Swiss NGO! We work with a local primary school in our village of Lifuwu next to Lake of Malawi where about 700 kids attending the lessons. We also support the local nursery school and start up several sport projects with the kids next to the beach.
help2kids is a young, dynamic organization located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city, which is situated on the Indian Ocean and in Lifuwu on Lake Malawi in Malawi. We help orphans by providing food, shelter, and lots of love at our children’s home. We help the community by bringing English and computers into the classrooms of local schools. Tasks

  • Coordinate all volunteer pre-arrival and post-arrival administration, including answering volunteer inquiries, updating volunteer platforms, following a step-by-step volunteer intake process, sending invoices, confirming airport pick-up, sending volunteer certificates, surveys, requests for sponsorship, etc. for Malawi
  • Post Facebook updates and write bi-monthly blog for our help2kids Malawi website/blog
  • Responsible for help2kids administrative work
  • Work closely with staff and help2kids Field Manager in Tanzania and Guesthouse Manager in Malawi to ensure adherence to schedule, cleanliness, and rules
  • Work closely with Field Manager and volunteers to create volunteer schedules, field trips, theme weeks, etc.
  • Managing, visiting and supervising current help2kids projects and be responsible for the budget and accounting in Malawi
  • Dealing with local project partners, Volunteers and staff
  • Weekly reporting’s to the field Manager and Swiss head office

Deloitte Consulting LLP Procurement Director (Millennium Challenge Account) Job Vacancy in Malawi

The Government of Malawi is establishing the Millennium Challenge Account – Malawi (MCA-Malawi) to oversee, manage, and implement multiple projects aimed at stimulating economic growth and reducing poverty in Malawi. These projects are funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a U.S. government agency focused on assisting countries dedicated to good governance, economic freedom, and investments in people.
Countries that meet MCC’s rigorous selection criteria and propose an economically sound program that specifically addresses the country’s key growth constraints may enter into a Millennium Challenge Compact with MCC. In April 2011, MCC agreed to a $350.7 million Compact focused on revitalizing the electrical power sector in Malawi.
 
MCA-Malawi is currently seeking a Procurement Director to effectively lead and manage all activities related to the procurement of works, goods, and services needed throughout the implementation of the Compact program, which will run for five (5) years after entry into force (expected to occur early 2013).
Assignment and Background Information
  • On behalf of MCA-Malawi, manage all activities related to the procurement of works, goods and services that are needed for the operations of MCA-Malawi and the implementation of the Compact program.
  • Conduct an assessment of the procurement resources needed by MCA-Malawi, lead the recruitment of experienced procurement support staff and/or the recruitment of consultants or technical assistance, and organize the procurement process, including overseeing the development of a detailed Procurement Operations Manual and enforcing compliance therewith.
  • Develop and implement a plan for creating process and a panel of experts to hear bid challenges.
  • Manage the interaction between people and institutions involved in procurements for the Compact program. In particular, coordinate inputs from members of the MCA-Malawi team and other technical entities within the Government of Malawi into the procurement process, including preparation of terms of reference (TORs) and statements of work (SOWs), participation on technical evaluation panels, and drafting of technical evaluation reports, as needed.
  • Lead MCA-Malawi’s efforts to ensure that all procurement transactions are implemented in accordance with the MCC Program Procurement Guidelines including reviewing and approving all solicitation documents to ensure they have received necessary approvals, adhere to agreed formats, meet best practice standards, and address MCA-Malawi’s procurement needs.
  • Serve as the main point of contact between MCA-Malawi and an outside Procurement Agent; review and approve the procurement notices, procurement plans, periodic reports and other deliverables that the Procurement Agent prepares; provide guidance and direction to the Procurement Agent team; and ensure that the actions of the Procurement Agent are in full compliance with agreed procedures and the MCC Program Procurement Guidelines.
  • Approves procurement decisions in accordance with the MCC Program Procurement Guidelines.
  • On behalf of MCA-Malawi, oversee negotiations with contractors and consultants with respect to change orders, variations and contract modifications, as necessary.
  • Compile and maintain complete records of all procurement activity.
  • Provide clear information on the progress of procurement activities to MCA-Malawi’s management team, as necessary, while taking all necessary actions to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of the procurement process.
  • Manages the members of the MCA-Malawi procurement team.
  • Serves as the main point of contact between MCA-Malawi and MCC on procurement issues, and prepare information and provide reports from time to time, as needed to keep MCC well informed of progress, issues and risks.
  • From time to time, represent MCA-Malawi in meetings with other donors or in public forums with respect to procurement procedures under the Compact program.
  • Other tasks and responsibilities as requested by the CEO or Deputy CEO.
Required Qualifications:
  • University degree in law, public administration, business administration, international development or a related field.
  • Extensive familiarity with the procurement guidelines used by international donors, including the World Bank or United Stated Government donor organizations.
  • Familiarity with FIDIC contracting procedures. Familiarity with FIDIC “Yellow Book” contracting is preferred.
  • Approximately seven (7) or more years of experience developing and managing public procurements within procurement systems that use or apply international procurement standards. Prior experience working with programs and projects that involve international donor assistance and international procurement or competitive bidding rules is preferred. Prior experience using or applying the World Bank’s procurement rules is preferred.
  • Ability to coordinate with numerous distinct entities in overseeing and reporting on procurement activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively and effectively with technical experts, government officials, stakeholders and counterparts.
  • Superior organizational and time-management skills. Demonstrated experience managing complex procurements and procurement procedures, including such situations as bid challenges, difficult negotiations, or contractor performance issues.
  • Strong computer skills in email, word processing, spreadsheets and the Internet. Experience with MS Project, Primavera or other project management software is strongly preferred..
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Research Consultant (Agronomy) - The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)

Description:
The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Malawi, is seeking a qualified candidate to serve as Consultant under MIRACLE project. Initial appointment will be for 9 months.

Essential Duties:
Under the guidance of the National Coordinator, the successful candidate will be involved in, but not limited to, the following support activities:
• Take leadership in establishment of mother and baby trials
o Identify farmers to participate in field experimentation
o Identify suitable sites of fields for establishment of mother and baby trials
o Ensure timely distribution of inputs (seeds, fertilisers, inoculants and pesticides) at community level
o Ensure timely land preparation and planting of all trials
 
• Establish and monitor community-based seed production schemes
o Identify farmers and fields for production seeds
o Establish seed multiplication fields
o Liaise with Seed Inspectors to ensure that seeds are inspected as required as required
o Monitor seed production according to production guides
o Conduct training as seed production, management, harvesting and storage
 
• Give oversight to capacity building needs in the project areas
o Conduct Training of Trainers (extension agents and lead farmers) on better management practices for production of leguminous crops such as soybeans, Cowpeas, groundnuts and pigeon peas
o Conduct participatory technology selection training e.g PVS
• Supervision of Technicians and district coordinators
o Ensure timely collection of essential data
o Ensure accuracy in data collection
o Collect and collate reports from filed technicians monthly
• Reporting
o Provide monthly reports from each project site
o Prepare quarterly reports
o Contribute to preparation of annual reports
• Awareness creation and Communication
o Organise farmer to farmer exchange visits
o Organise mid season evaluations
o Organise end of season evaluations
o Organise donor visits to project sites
o Write ‘successful’ agronomic stories from project sites
o Be the main link between agronomy and DARS and other partners
The position will require significant field work travel within Malawi.

Required Qualifications and Skills
1. BSc degree in Agriculture with specialization in Agronomy or crop sciences from a recognized University
2. Proficiency with Excel, SPSS and STATA.
3. Excellent spoken and written English.
4. Good interpersonal skills.
5. Ability to work under pressure.
